Google DeepMind is Google's AI research organisation, based in London in the United Kingdom. Its roots lie in DeepMind, a London company founded in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman. The company's UK entity (now named DeepMind Technologies Limited) was registered in September 2010 as a private limited company, and the company was acquired by Google in 2014. In April 2023 DeepMind and the Brain team from Google Research merged to form today's Google DeepMind. It is not separately listed on a stock market and belongs to Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc. As of October 2026 it is led by Senior Vice President Koray Kavukcuoglu, who reports to CEO Sundar Pichai. In August 2026 Hassabis stepped down as CEO and became chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet.
Google DeepMind carries out AI research and develops AI models within Google. Its stated mission is 'to build AI responsibly to benefit humanity'. Scientists, engineers, ethicists and others work there, and it also builds AI to help scientific research such as biology. The models it makes feed into Google products such as the Gemini AI chat app and Google AI Studio, a tool for developers.
Key examples of its work include AlphaGo, an AI that plays the board game Go. In March 2016 AlphaGo beat the South Korean professional Go player Lee Sedol 4–1 over five games. AlphaFold is an AI that predicts the 3D structure of proteins from their amino acid sequences (the order of the building blocks that make up a protein). For this work, Hassabis and John Jumper received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (shared with David Baker). Google DeepMind is also responsible for developing Google's Gemini series of AI models.
