What this is

How AI models followed one another, drawn as one line per family, with a list underneath. There are 11 families and 161 versions so far; each dot is one version. Pick a family to walk through its versions one at a time. Below the chart, the same information is written out as a list.

How to use it

Students: pick a family and count how the gaps between versions changed, or put two companies' families side by side and compare release dates. Teachers: start with a question such as “What does the number after a model's name mean?” and have students read the records to find what changed within one family. Tapping a version opens the record of its release, so you can check at the source what the company actually claimed.

Where it comes from

Each version links to the record that documents its release, and every date is that record's date. Versions without a record aren't included, so some are missing. Which families and versions to include is kept in a separate list on this site, which grows as records of new versions are added. Where labels would overlap on the chart only the dot is drawn — point at it, or find the name in the list.
